Boyertown Pickfest Returns October 14th-16th!

pickfest3BOYERTOWN, PA—Boyertown’s Pickfest: Celebrating Americana October 14th, 15th, and 16th

Boyertown’s Pickfest, presented by Green Mountain Energy and hosted by Durango’s Saloon, The Other Farm Brewing, and Frecon Farms, aims to celebrate the finest attributes of the Boyertown Area and Berks County!  Come out and experience agriculture, music, food, arts and history that are alive and well here in Boyertown today.

Pickfest was started 10 years ago as a tiny little get together in Frecon’s Orchard with the Manatawny Creek Ramblers, as a way to launch the Pick Your Own operation – a now well-attended fall festivity for the area!  “As the festival grew in size, so did the need to expand it, and what a better way to expand it than to bring it into the heart of our town and include all of our comrades who celebrate this time of the year with their own artisanal contributions!” notes Hank Frecon of Frecon Farms.

The historic – and iconic to Pickfest – Ford flatbed truck will anchor the main stage for another year featuring area musicians like Stephanie Grace, The Hoppin Boxcar’s, Lady Bird, and hosted by Pickfest alums, the Manatawny Creek Ramblers.  The stage will be in full swing starting at 12pm on Saturday, October 15th and will be located on the block of 120-128 E Philadelphia Avenue in Boyertown, which is between The Other Farm Brewing and Durango’s Saloon.  Bring your own chair and let the Pickfest folk fill your cup with a brew from the tap truck featuring over 14 beers from local breweries – plus a few rarities from the Other Farm and Frecon’s Cidery!

Don’t miss out on a host of other activities happening in and around Boyertown the entire weekend (October 14th-16th) including historic train rides on the Colebrookdale Railroad, story-time with Johnny Appleseed at the Boyertown Community Library, glass-blowing lessons at Taylor Backes, and more! Visit boyertownpickfest.com for the schedule and more information.

And, of course, don’t forget about the place where it all started – the Frecon’s Orchard!  Pick-Your-Own season is in full swing and will be open during Pickfest weekend for you to stock your basket with perfectly-ripened apples and loads of pumpkins!  The orchard stage will be rockin’ from 12-3pm with Killen Clark on Saturday and Cliff Hillis on Sunday.

Admission is complimentary to this year’s Pickfest* – and all food and beverages will be pay-as-you-go!

*Admission to the official Pickfest stage area is complimentary – some area activities require reservations and/or additional fees. Please check boyertownpickfest.com for more information.

Nighttime musical entertainment and activities will take place at The Other Farm Brewing Company and Durango’s Saloon immediately following the music line-up on Saturday.  Attendees are encouraged to spend the night and lodge with the Twin Turrets, Bear Creek Resort, and other B&Bs local to the area.

Breaking Free from Unhealthy Internal Dialogue

Internal dialogue happens constantly for most people.  It occurs mostly as words rolling around in our heads but there are also feelings that accompany the words or sometimes just the feelings alone.  Feelings of fear, worry, anger or feelings of peace, joy, serenity.  I used to think that I had no control over this inner dialogue.  After all, if someone has done something that I deem stupid, inappropriate, or mean, I thought that it was only normal to react with anger.  It may be considered normal or “to be expected” but is it wise?  Medical science shows us that negative emotions make us sick and can lead to pre-mature death.  Metaphysics tells us that thoughts are substance and can manifest materially in our lives in accordance with whether or not the thought is a positive one or a negative one.   [Read more…]

Smokey the Cat

Smokey

This little kitten was found by a 6 year old girl hiding under a car in a torrential downpour.  The girl’s family took her in only to discover that she had a broken leg.  The family was destitute financially and could not afford even an initial vet visit.  They contacted No Kill Lehigh Valley.  We arranged for them to be seen by one of our participating vets who confirmed that the leg was badly broken.  The kitten was referred to the specialists at Valley Central who greatly discounted the surgery – and provided that cool cast cover.  No Kill Lehigh Valley paid for the $1700.00 surgery and the family adopted this little one as their own.

So many animals would have been left to suffer and die if it wasn’t for No Kill Lehigh Valley.

No Kill Lehigh Valley

No Kill Lehigh Valley is a non- profit animal welfare group that fills a very special niche in our community. We provide financial assistance for veterinary care and spay/neuter surgeries.  Our goal is to keep companion animals in their homes whenever possible by providing this financial help and other support through our e mail group (nokill.lehighvalley@yahoo.com), website (www.nokilllv.com), and Facebook.

No Kill Lehigh Valley was founded in 2007 as the result of a growing concern about the high rate of killing at the Lehigh Co. Humane Society.  We believe that no animal should have to die just because it’s homeless.   We support efforts to reduce the  companion animal population through humane measures and to provide people  with the support they need to keep and care for their animals.

Low cost spay/ neuter services are an essential part of this equation.  We support the local low cost clinics and supplement their fees when people are unable to afford them.  Since January of this year we have expended over $13,000.00 for spay/neuter surgeries.  In addition to paying for companion cats to be spayed/neutered, we pay for the surgeries on feral cats through trap/neuter/return programs.  We also believe that companion animals should not have to suffer just because their human companions cannot pay for veterinary care.  So far this year we have provided  over $36,000.00 in veterinary costs.  We have financed  care ranging from kittens with infected eyes to dogs with broken bones who require expensive surgery by a board certified surgeon.

Our services are desperately needed in these difficult economic times.  People who love their animals suffer terribly when they cannot afford to care for them so, while our main goal is to help the animals, we are helping people too.   While our work is primarily fund raising, we also are involved in making municipal officials and politicians aware of the importance of companion animals and the needs of those who care for them.

Remember, the most important thing you can do if you care about animals is to make sure your cat(s) and/ or dog(s) are spayed and neutered.

Freed From a Dungeon

This poor cat had been kept in a windowless basement for 11 years.  The people keeping him there had minimal interaction with him.  Occasionally their Jack Russel terriors would get into the basment and terrorize him.  A young woman started boarding with them and was horrified by this situation.  When they were not around, she would bring the cat up to her room.  She discovered that he had blood dripping from his mouth because of severe dental problems.  At this point she contacted No Kill Lehigh Valley.  We immediately arranged for  a foster home and paid  $450.00 for his veterinary care.  And, we struck gold when one of our members found him a real home.  He is shown here in the arms of his new mom who says that he is the sweetest cat she has ever knwon – and she’s known a lot of cats.  He now spends his days looking out of her glass doors at the world he couldn’t see before and he is doted on and much loved.
